Scalloped Oval Cabinet Knob, Solid Ash

£5.00

A scalloped oval cabinet knob, 60 mm wide, cut from a single block of solid ash. Sold individually, in twelve finishes.

The outline swells and pinches its way around the edge, and a groove cut just inside repeats the same line, so the middle of the knob sits up as a raised island with a channel running around it. That channel is what the fingertip finds first — you pull from the rim rather than gripping the whole thing. Wider than it is tall, it suits a drawer front or a cupboard door where a round knob would look undersized.

Mounting
  1. Check that your door already has a mounting hole. If not, drill a 4 mm hole through the front.
  2. Pass the M4 × 30 mm screw through the hole from the back of the door.
  3. Thread the screw into the metal insert in the knob and tighten by hand, holding the knob level.
  4. Finish with a quarter turn of a screwdriver — no more. Overtightening pulls the insert out of the wood.

The long axis is 60 mm, so on a narrow drawer measure the clearance to the edge before you drill, and hold the knob horizontal through the last quarter turn. If your door is thinner than 24 mm, the screw will stand proud inside the insert; that is normal and does not affect how the knob holds.
Materials & workshop

Wood: solid ash, single block. Hardware: threaded metal insert and M4 × 30 mm screw.

Eleven of the twelve finishes use ADLER Legno Dura-Öl, an Austrian oil-based finish. It leaves a matt, open-pored surface — the colour sits in the wood rather than on top of it, so a green knob still reads as ash and not as painted board — while resisting water and household chemicals the way a varnish would. The oil is certified to EN 71-3 for the migration of heavy metals, and to DIN 53160-1 and 53160-2 for saliva and perspiration resistance. The twelfth option, Unfinished, is bare sanded ash with no coating; it is the palest of the set and darkens with handling.

Cut, shaped, sanded and finished in our own workshop in Roman, Romania. The groove is the slow part: it follows the same curve as the outline, so it has to be cut clean and then sanded without rounding away the line it draws. On the coloured finishes the groove holds a little more pigment than the flat, which is why the outline reads darker than the rest of the knob. Colour and figure vary from piece to piece; if you are fitting a whole run, order them together and we will cut them from the same board where we can.
Care

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. The oil finish resists water and household cleaners, so no special product is needed and none is recommended.

Dust collects in the groove around the centre; a dry brush clears it faster than a cloth. Unfinished knobs have no coating, so they pick up the marks of daily use and slowly darken. If you would rather they did not, oil them yourself before fitting.
