Four wall hook shapes turned and carved from solid ash. Buy one, or take all four as a set. Two finishes: Natural, which keeps the pale colour of the wood, and Walnut, a dark stain that leaves the grain visible underneath.

A hook is the first thing you touch when you come home and the last thing you use before you leave. These are shaped so a coat, a towel or a dog lead sits on them without sliding off. All four stand 44 mm out from the wall, which is enough to take a winter coat and not so much that you catch a shoulder on one in a narrow hallway.

The four shapes read differently on a wall. Shell is the smallest and quietest. Crescent leans, so it holds a strap that would slide off a straight peg. Leaf is the same height as Crescent but wider and flatter. Star is the largest and the only one with points — one on its own above a radiator does more than a row of four.

Each hook comes with the fixing: a double-threaded screw, a metal insert already set into the back of the hook, and a nylon plug. Made in our workshop in Romania.

Wall hooks in solid ash, sold singly or as a set of four — one of each shape. Two finishes: Natural and Walnut.

Natural keeps the pale colour of ash and its open grain. Walnut is a dark stain worked into the same wood; the grain stays visible under it, and against a white wall it reads almost as a silhouette. Both are shown in the photographs — the set images have all four shapes in each finish.

All four shapes project 44 mm from the wall. Every hook is supplied with its own fixing: a double-threaded screw, a threaded metal insert already fitted in the back of the hook, and a nylon plug.

Mounting
  1. Mark the wall. For a row, 100–150 mm between hooks: closer than 100 mm and two coats fight each other, wider than 150 mm and the row stops reading as a row.
  2. Drill with an 8 mm bit to a depth of 50 mm.
  3. Push the nylon plug in until it sits flush with the wall.
  4. Drive the wood end of the double-threaded screw into the plug, leaving the machine-threaded end standing out.
  5. Screw the hook onto the exposed thread by turning the hook itself, until it sits tight against the wall. The metal insert is already in the back of the hook — nothing to fit.
  6. Stop turning as soon as the hook meets the wall. Forcing it further does not tighten anything and will strip the plug.

The 5 kg figure applies to solid masonry. Plasterboard needs its own anchors, which are not supplied — a hook takes a sideways pull every time a coat comes off it, and that is what pulls a standard plug out of a hollow wall.

Do not use adhesive. A hook carries its load on a lever arm 44 mm long, which is the worst case for any adhesive pad.
Materials & workshop

Solid ash, one piece per hook. Ash is pale and open-pored with a long straight grain, and on a shape this small the grain does most of the work — the curve of each hook cuts across the growth rings at a changing angle, so no two hooks come out with the same pattern even when they are the same shape.

Shaped, sanded and finished in our own workshop in Roman, Romania. The metal insert is set into the back of each hook before finishing, so the thread runs true into the wood rather than being cut into it afterwards — that is the joint a hook lives or dies on, and it is the reason these can be screwed straight onto a wall stud without a backplate.
Care

Wipe with a dry, soft cloth. Never use water or a household cleaner.

A hook is handled more than anything else on a wall, and both finishes will show that over the years — Natural picks up a slight sheen where hands and sleeves pass over it, Walnut lightens a little on the high points of the curve. On four hooks in a row the wear is even, and it is the part of the object that shows it has been used.
