A half-moon shelf cut from one piece of solid ash and hollowed on the top face, so the surface dips slightly towards the middle. Small things stay where you put them instead of sliding to the edge — glasses, keys, a watch, a phone.

Seven sizes, from 200 mm across to 500 mm. The smallest holds a pair of glasses beside a bed; the largest is a hall shelf. All of them are 42 mm thick and taper to a thin edge at the front, which is why a shelf this solid still reads as light on the wall.

The fixing is concealed and included. Two steel rods go into the wall and the shelf slides onto them, so there is no bracket underneath and nothing visible from any angle — the shelf appears to come out of the wall.

A floating half-moon shelf in solid ash, hollowed on the top face. One piece of wood, no glued joints, 42 mm thick throughout and tapered to a thin front edge.

Seven sizes. The three smallest suit a bedside, a hallway or a bathroom — a place to put down what comes out of your pockets. From 350 mm upwards the shelf takes books, a small plant or a speaker.

Mounting

The shelf slides onto two steel rods fixed in the wall. Nothing is visible once it is up, which also means the holes have to be right the first time — take the extra minute at step two.

  1. Turn the shelf over and measure the distance between the two holes in the back edge. Every size has its own spacing.
  2. Mark both points on the wall at the height you want, then check them against a spirit level rather than against each other. Two holes that are level with one another but not with the floor will still leave the shelf tilted.
  3. Drill and plug for your wall type, then screw the rods in until they sit firm and horizontal.
  4. Slide the shelf onto the rods with steady pressure. It should go on stiffly; a shelf that slips on loosely means the holes have opened up.

The 5 kg figure applies to solid masonry. Plasterboard carries far less whatever anchor you use, and the load hangs on the leverage of the rods rather than on the wall face — on a hollow wall, fix into a stud or keep to the smaller sizes and light objects.

Do not use adhesive of any kind. A concealed-rod shelf that comes away takes the plaster with it.
Materials & workshop

Solid ash, cut from one board and hollowed on the top face. Ash is pale and open-pored with a long straight grain, and hollowing a curve across that grain is what gives the top face its pattern — the cut crosses the growth rings at a changing angle, so the figure widens towards the middle of the dish.

Shaped, sanded and finished in our own workshop in Roman, Romania. A shelf 42 mm thick that tapers to a thin front edge uses considerably more wood than a flat board of the same footprint, because most of the thickness is cut away and thrown out. That is the whole point: the shelf has the mass to hold two rods and still looks like a thin curve on the wall.
Care

Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. The lacquer handles a wipe; standing water at the low point of the dish will eventually work under it.

Keep it away from a radiator and off a wall that gets direct afternoon sun. Ash lightens rather than darkens under strong light, and it does so unevenly on a curved surface.
