A constellation cabinet knob, 44 mm across, cut from a single block of solid ash. Sold individually, in twelve finishes.

Two opposite corners are drawn out to a point, and the face is drilled with round holes of four different sizes, scattered rather than set in rows — one large in the middle and the rest falling away from it. The holes are deep enough to read as dark points from across the room, so the pattern stays visible on the pale finishes as well as the dark ones. On a child's wardrobe it looks like a night sky; on a kitchen drawer it just looks like texture.

Mounting
  1. Check that your door already has a mounting hole. If not, drill a 4 mm hole through the front.
  2. Pass the M4 × 30 mm screw through the hole from the back of the door.
  3. Thread the screw into the metal insert in the knob and tighten by hand, with the two points on the diagonal you want.
  4. Finish with a quarter turn of a screwdriver — no more. Overtightening pulls the insert out of the wood.

The pattern of holes is not symmetrical, so each knob has a right way up — but because it reads as scattered, a small rotation does no harm. What matters is that the two points sit on the same diagonal across a whole run. If your door is thinner than 24 mm, the screw will stand proud inside the insert; that is normal and does not affect how the knob holds.
Materials & workshop

Wood: solid ash, single block. Hardware: threaded metal insert and M4 × 30 mm screw.

Eleven of the twelve finishes use ADLER Legno Dura-Öl, an Austrian oil-based finish. It leaves a matt, open-pored surface — the colour sits in the wood rather than on top of it, so a green knob still reads as ash and not as painted board — while resisting water and household chemicals the way a varnish would. The oil is certified to EN 71-3 for the migration of heavy metals, and to DIN 53160-1 and 53160-2 for saliva and perspiration resistance. The twelfth option, Unfinished, is bare sanded ash with no coating; it is the palest of the set and darkens with handling.

Cut, shaped, sanded and finished in our own workshop in Roman, Romania. Four drill sizes on one small face means four changes of tool and no margin for a wandering bit — each hole is drilled to the same depth and the rim broken by hand so nothing catches a fingernail. Drilling into ash tears the fibres if it is rushed, which is why the holes are cut before the face is given its final sanding.
Care

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. The oil finish resists water and household cleaners, so no special product is needed and none is recommended.

The holes are deeper than they are wide, so a cloth will not empty them; a dry brush will. Unfinished knobs have no coating and darken with handling.
