A wall cross cut from one piece of solid ash, with rounded arms and a shallow groove running the length of each one. No joint at the crossing — the four arms and the centre are the same board, which is why the grain runs continuously from the foot to the head.

242 mm tall, 142 mm across, 24 mm thick. That is large enough to hold a wall on its own and small enough to sit above a door, beside a bed, or over a shelf without taking the room over.

Three finishes. Unfinished is bare sanded ash, pale and open-grained, and it will warm slightly with handling. Oiled keeps that colour but deepens the grain and gives the surface something to resist dust. Walnut is a dark stain that turns the ash nearly brown-black while leaving the grain visible underneath — the strongest contrast of the three against a light wall.

Product details

A wall cross carved from a single piece of solid ash, 242 mm tall. The arms are rounded rather than square-edged, and a shallow groove is cut along each one, which catches the light and keeps the shape from reading as flat.

Choose one of three finishes and whether you want the wall fixing fitted. With the fixing, a keyhole plate is recessed into the back so the cross hangs flush against the wall. Without it, the back is left flat — the right choice if the cross will stand on a shelf, lie on a table or be given as a hand cross.

Mounting

Ordered with the wall fixing, a keyhole plate is recessed into the back and the cross hangs on a single screw.

  1. Hold the cross against the wall and mark through the keyhole opening with a pencil.
  2. Drill and plug for your wall type. At 500 g almost any fixing will carry it; the point of the plug is to stop the screw pulling loose over the years, not to carry the weight.
  3. Leave the screw head standing about 4 mm proud of the wall.
  4. Hook the wide part of the keyhole over the screw, then let the cross settle down onto the narrow part. It should sit flush; if it rocks, the screw is out too far.
  5. Check the vertical arm against a plumb line rather than against the ceiling or a door frame — a cross that is out by a degree reads as crooked from across the room.

Ordered without the fixing, there is nothing to mount. The back is flat and unmarked, for a cross that will stand, lie on a table or be held.

Do not use adhesive strips on the finished versions. The oil and the stain both leave a surface that adhesive lifts when it comes away.
Materials & workshop

Solid ash, cut from one board. Ash is pale and open-pored, and its grain runs long and straight, which is the reason this shape works in it: the grain follows the vertical arm from foot to head without a break, and the groove cut along the arm crosses it at a right angle, so the two patterns hold each other.

Shaped, sanded and finished in our own workshop in Roman, Romania. Cutting a cross from one piece rather than joining two is more wood and more work — a lap joint would be quicker and would not show — but a joint is the first thing to open when a room dries out in winter, and a single piece has nothing to open.
Care

Wipe with a dry, soft cloth. The groove along each arm collects dust and a soft brush clears it faster than a cloth. Never use water or a household cleaner on any of the three finishes.

Bare ash will pick up marks from handling and darken slowly and unevenly where it is touched most — some people want exactly that, others should choose the oiled version. Keep the cross away from a radiator or a wall that gets direct afternoon sun.
